Afro Kelenkye Band!

With the help of Voodoo Funk’s Frank Gossner we are putting out unreleased material from the Afro Kelenkye Band. Led by Jagger Botchway, the group recorded the legendary rare Ghanaian Funk album, Moving World. Soon after the group went back into the studio to record more tracks but ran out of money. The recordings were left on the shelves until Miles Cleret from Soundway Records found them some 40 years later and brought them to Frank’s attention. The track “Jungle Funk” sees the group relax into a mid tempo Afro funk groove. “Mother Africa” is a guitar driven Afro psychedelic instrumental with a fuzzed out guitar solo. “Too Bad Girl” features a dark melody and a laid back trumpet solo. “Munchin’ Session” grooves with trumpet riffs galore. Mastered from the original reel to reel tapes and pressed on 2 x 45s and housed in a thick collectible jacket cover designed by Frank Gossner. Coming out on May 8th you can pre-order it here for $14.99. Limited to 1,000 copies.

Fabulous Fugitives Out Now!

January 18th, 2011

Fabulous Fugitives featuring Michael Sharkey is a rare doubler A sider containing two awesome deep funk cuts from this Chicago group. Originally it was released in 1975 on the J’Ace label owned by local gospel record label owner Style Wooten. The group only put out one 45 and the orginal masters have long since been destroyed as far as we know. The A side, “What the World Needs”  is a politically charged funk bomb. The flip side, “You Made Me Cry” is a more straight forward funk track with plenty of fat drum fills.

It’s out now! Pick it up at all good retailers such Dusty Groove and Juno Records or at our store here for $8.99

Jordan Valentine Out Now!

December 1st, 2010

After some delay, Cultures of Soul is proud to announce that Jordan Valentine’s first 7 inch is out now on Cultures of Soul Records.

Growing up Jordan’s been heavily influenced by her mother’s southern cooking and her love of Motown. There are two great tracks on this 7 inch coming out. The A side is a masterful cover of “Tell Me What’s On Your Mind” and the B side is an original sister funk track with howls of joy reminiscent of Betty Davis. Hear more of  what the local press saying about her here:
